Standardized National Test in Astronomy The Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) and the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education are in charge of setting up the NSEA Exam. The goal of the National Standard Examination in Astronomy Applications is to find talented and ambitious students to take part in the Astronomy Olympiad programme.
It is one of the few prestigious competitions for students who are interested in Astronomy. In the Astronomy and Astrophysics programme of the International Olympiad, there are five stages.

What is the 2023 NSEA exam?
This year, because of the covid pandemic, the IAPT and HBCSE haven’t said how the NSEA and IOAA exams will work or when they will happen. This year, there will be a three-step process to choose who takes the other National Standard Examination. Students can sign up for NSEA at their own schools.

NSEA Exam Format
For the National Standard Examination in Astronomy, the language of the test is English. When taking this test, students must have a good understanding of the basic ideas of Physics, Astronomy, and Mathematics. There are more than one answer choice for each question on the NSEA, and wrong answers bring down your score. The NSEA exam format is listed in the table below so that students can use it as a guide.
The NSA’s plan for 2023
The Indian Association of Physics Teachers and the Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education do not have a set plan for the NSEA curriculum. But the topics that need to be reviewed for the NSEA in Physics, Mathematics, and Astronomy are the same ones that are covered in the 11th and 12th grades. Students can read the NCERT textbooks for Physics and Math to learn about the basics.
Universe by William J. Kaufmann, Roger Freedman, and Robert Geller is a book that many people use to prepare for the NSEA. Roy and Clarke wrote a book called Astronomy: Principles and Practice that you can also look at.
Criteria for eligibility
- Age requirements: Those who want to join must have been born between July 1, 2002, and June 30, 2007, on any day.
- Citizenship: They must have an Indian passport or be able to get one. They must be living in India on or before November 30, 2019. They must have been going to school in India or an Indian school system before November 30, 2019. Also, students who are Overseas Citizens of India will not be able to represent our country at the International Olympiad programs. They can take part in the next steps of the selection process.
- Academic requirements: Applicants must not have passed their 12th Board exams or be on track to do so before November 30, 2021. They can’t start their studies at a college or university before June 1, 2022.
- In 2021, they can’t take NSEJS.
The fee to apply for NSEA
Any NSE center in the country will have the application fee for the NSEA. For the National Standard Examination in Astronomy, students have to pay a small fee of 150 rupees to fill out the application form. Part of the application fee goes to the IAPT, and the school keeps the other part as its maintenance fee. The application fee for students who were born in India but live in another country is 5 USD.
Note that the application fee only needs to be paid once, even if there are multiple steps in the selection process.
How the NSEA picks its members
Students are chosen based on their qualifications, as well as on the proportionate representation and minimum representation clauses. When figuring out the Minimum Admittable Scores, the average grade of the top 10 students is used. Students must meet the MAS to move on to the second stage of IOAA. Also, if there are open seats, students are chosen based on their merit.
At the Orientation-cum-Selection camp, students who meet the NSEA cut-off marks are also taught how to analyze data, understand the theory, and make observations in Astronomy.
Stopping
For the National Standard Examination in Astronomy, the cut-off marks are based on how well the top 10 candidates did. To move on to the next stage of the Olympiad program, students must get at least the minimum admissible scores (MAS) on the NSEA. The MAS is equal to 50% of the average grade of the top 10 students in the NSEA.
Form to Apply for the NSEA Exam in 2023
This year, the National Standard Examination in the Astronomy application form will be out soon. The only way to get an NSEA application form is to get it in person at one of the NSE centers. IAPT has NSE centers all over the country. There are thousands of them. Follow these steps to get a copy of the NSA application form: Find the nearest NSE center: First, you need to find the essay center that is closest to you.

Filling out the application form: When you go to the NSE Center, you can get an application form and fill it out with your name, your father’s name, your school, and any other required information. Then, you can send it back to the NSE Center.
